ERIKS type M (type B according to the DIN standard) has a single metal casing and rubber sealing lip. Since the casing is made of metal, it must be fitted in a well-finished, undamaged groove. Large volumes of oil seals with metal casings are often cheaper, which is why they are often used as original equipment in machines. However, if an oil seal has to be replaced, types with a rubber exterior (type R or RST) are easier to fit. Type MST is similar to M and commonly used. The difference is the dust lip in the MST oil seal that prevents dust and dirt reaching the sealing lip, and extends its service life in dusty environments.

Oil seals close spaces between moving or stationary mechanical components to prevent lubricants like grease and oil from escaping, while also preventing dust, dirt, moisture, and other contaminants from entering the seal. Also known as shaft seals, dirt seals, lip seals, or grease seals, the primary components of any oil seal include an inner metal ring, which provides structural support, and a spring, which provides interference for effective sealing.
In the manufacturing sector, oil seal rubber parts are employed in pumps, compressors, and various machinery where lubrication is critical. Their ability to maintain a seal under high pressure and rotational speeds makes them indispensable in these settings. The Importance of Rubber Valve Cover Gaskets in Engine MaintenanceOil seals can offer:
Use an old screwdriver or scraper to carefully remove all traces of the old gasket from the cover and engine flanges.
Have you found the right oil seal for your application? The next step is fitting the oil seal correctly, so that it remains undamaged.
