Classical oil seals consist of a metal housing that carries the dynamic sealing lip and provides the static sealing function. These are usually manufactured of elastomer material, such as ACM, Silicone or FPM. Further, since they are in contact with the surface of the rotating shaft, the lip is pressed onto the shaft surface by means of a spring ring.
Many – too numerous to list, covering a vast range of designs, sizes, and materials suitable for a never-ending range of applications. Some designs conform to International Standards such as BS1399 and DIN 3760 for metric sizes and seal types, but the majority have been manufactured to suit particular applications – hence the enormous selection available. Cover the valve gear with a clean cloth to prevent dirt getting into the working parts of the engine.
Oil seals are available in an immense range of sizes, for shafts from a few millimetres to several metres. Once the shaft diameter, groove diameter (housing diameter) and groove width are known, selecting an appropriate oil seal is a simple task. An oil seal or its product description is usually associated with three dimensions, for example 6x15x4. These refer to the sizes of the hardware for which the oil seal is designed. In this example, this oil seal is suitable for: 6-mm shaft diameter x 15-mm groove diameter x 4-mm minimum groove width.
First disconnect the battery earth terminal , to avoid the risk of a short circuit while the fuel pipes are disconnected.
Viton Oil Seals - A synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomer, Viton is used to make oil seals that provide resistance in both high temperature, up to 250°C and low compression set components. They also offer a high resistance to chemicals and abrasions, so they can be used in elements that regularly interact with petroleum and solvents.
Refit the sump, taking great care not to disturb the gasket. Hold it up by hand and fit two front bolts and two rear ones to keep it in place while you refit the rest.
